The Lure of Underconsumption: Why and How

Lately, there has been an increase in discussions about underconsumption on various platforms such as social media, blogs, and podcasts. This phenomenon has been dubbed “underconsumption core”. Despite the world’s emphasis on success through acquisition and abundance, underconsumption is not just a passing trend. It represents a significant shift towards a more meaningful and sustainable way of life.

People are now sharing videos of outdoor activities like hiking, moving away from shopping as a default activity, utilizing what they already have including food in their fridges and pantries, and engaging in fun activities after work instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media. Underconsumption, at its core, means consuming less than what we are used to or capable of, focusing on quality and purpose rather than quantity. This concept is gaining popularity due to various reasons such as environmental concerns, economic changes, and mental and emotional clarity. I believe that focusing on consuming less can lead to a more fulfilling life.

I want to make it clear that I am only beginning to explore underconsumption and I do not intend to adopt a rigid approach. However, the idea of embracing underconsumption has captivated my heart and mind. I am incorporating this philosophy into my daily life through mindful purchasing, embracing minimalism, prioritizing quality over quantity, supporting sustainable practices, repurposing items, and sharing. These practices remind me of the minimalism, capsule wardrobes, and thrifting trends that have emerged in recent years.

Moreover, I am striving to cultivate contentment, being grateful for what I already have, using up what I own before acquiring something new, and becoming a more conscious consumer. Exploring underconsumption allows me to appreciate the richness that comes from having less. This shift not only enhances my own life but also contributes to the greater good. Have you considered embracing underconsumption? If so, how has it benefited you?
