Embracing an Attitude of Gratitude: Why “Life is Good” is More Than a Saying

Growing up in the 2000s, my father had a mild obsession with the brand ‘life is good’, which featured little character people engaging in leisurely activities such as grilling, walking a dog, or boating on a lake. The irony was that this lifestyle was not always or even partially reflective of reality due to work and societal pressures. However, the mantra of ‘life is good’ remained in our hearts and minds as an aspiration. When I examine the expression ‘life is good’ more closely, it boils down to the simple concept of gratitude. The busyness and chaos of life often pull us in various directions, leaving little time for reflection or appreciation. Nevertheless, amidst our hectic lives, one transformative practice stands out: gratitude. It is not just a warm, fuzzy feeling; it is a scientifically supported practice that can truly enhance our well-being. Embracing this attitude, the phrase ‘life is good’ becomes more than mere words. Let us explore how gratitude can change our lives and why it resonates so deeply with the idea of ‘life is good’.

The Science of Gratitude

Cultivating a practice of gratitude has been shown by research to improve one’s mental state. Practicing gratitude can enhance emotional well-being, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, increase happiness and satisfaction, strengthen relationships and trust, and even improve cardiovascular health and reduce inflammation. When I considered it, practicing gratitude seemed less overwhelming to me compared to other habits. I started jotting down moments from my day that I was thankful for each evening.

Simple things, like a smile from a stranger or a warm cup of tea, began to stand out more vividly. Before going to bed, my partner and I began a gratitude practice, sharing 1-3 things we were grateful for, whether it was individual, as a couple, something our family did, or something silly like having our favorite food for dinner. This ritual became a lovely way for us to reconnect at the end of a long day. I also made an effort to say nice things to myself and others, including speaking kindly to myself about my mind, body, and spirit, and expressing gratitude for the work they do to keep me alive and thriving.

The Art and Ripple Effect of Gratitude

As I continued practicing gratitude, I observed a positive ripple effect in various areas of my life. My mood improved, and I experienced a profound sense of contentment that was previously absent. It became evident that focusing on the good rather than the lack made a significant difference in my overall perspective. Embracing gratitude also had a heartwarming impact on my relationships. I found myself expressing appreciation more frequently, whether it was through heartfelt thank-yous to friends or notes of gratitude to colleagues. This shift in behavior resulted in more positive and meaningful interactions. Even during family meals, we make it a point to express gratitude for things we are thankful for, whether it’s the food on the table, positive experiences at work or school, or even our favorite colors. I also noticed that as my stress levels decreased due to gratitude, I felt more energetic and less susceptible to minor illnesses. It’s truly remarkable how something as simple as acknowledging our blessings can have tangible effects on our physical well-being.

Embracing “Life is Good”

As I embrace gratitude, the phrase ‘life is good’ has taken on a new meaning for me. It is not about denying life’s difficulties, but about recognizing and appreciating the goodness that exists, even in the midst of challenges. By focusing on the positives and practicing gratitude, I have found that life indeed feels richer and more fulfilling. Gratitude has taught me that while life may not always be perfect, there is always something to appreciate. It is a powerful reminder that despite the ups and downs, there is inherent goodness in every day. So, as you navigate your own journey, consider how an attitude of gratitude can make ‘life is good’ not just a saying, but a heartfelt reality.
